Teeth Grinding and Implants

There are many reasons patients see us for dental implants, but one of the most common is to replace teeth damaged by bruxism. Bruxism is the fancy term for what most people know as tooth grinding. This behavior not only wears down the enamel of your teeth, it can also be responsible for jaw pain, headaches and difficulty chewing.

Bruxism can be caused by many factors, including:


  • Malocclusion (Abnormal tooth alignment)
  • Acid reflux disease
  • Type “A” personality
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Anger
  • Coping mechanism
  • Side effect from psychiatric medication
  • Complication from Huntington’s or Parkinson’s disease
